The jungle upbringing, the long strange trip

Have you ever seen a night sky with no light pollution? It will blow your mind. It blows mine every time I fly home. I grew up in the middle of nowhere. No neighbors for miles other than a couple seasonal hunting cabins, no traffic, no hope to get up or down the road in the winter. It is paradise.

Franklinville is an interesting place. There's one stoplight, two dollar stores, and about 400 churches. There were 79 kids in my graduating class, and if I walked into the high school today, all of my teachers would remember me. The benefits of growing up in a small town are huge, but since leaving I've always felt the need to come back and "fix" it. It's a town full of so many people that, for lack of a better description, belong in a small town. There's so much beauty and potential that will never be utilized. All of the businesses that set up shop are almost guaranteed to fail. All of the restaurants have the same maroon and dark green color scheme and serve the same thing. It is a town full of people that survive on Walmart by necessity. And I love it like no other, so I will always suppress the need to change it.

A small town is a healthy thing for people like me to have. I love change, and I thrive on it, but it's a relief to have one little corner of the world that will continue to be exactly what it has always been.

^ This is my parents backyard (and THAT is a brewing thunderstorm)

I feel sad that some people never saw this kind of stuff when they were growing up. I feel like it's all I'm made of. Fresh air is so important.

Do you know how I got to where I am right now? It's like...The Total Asshole's Guide To A Lucky Life. I went to a college that I only chose because it was where my high school band director went and I admired him so much. When I decided I hated my English major after only one semester, I switched to Music Business because learning about contracts and record labels sounded cool, and it would require that I take some basic music classes that I knew I'd love. I didn't take it seriously, especially not the business classes. I got a 49 on my accounting final (Hi Mom!) and I assure you, I am not a stupid girl. I never studied and did almost every paper the night before it was due. I hated college with the exception of the music classes.

The spring semester of my junior year found me taking a student record label class that made me reach out to artists that I'd want to sign. A friend named Kenny had a link to Grace Potter and the Nocturnals in his AIM info and I fell so deeply in love with their latest album (which was then Nothing But The Water) but didn't feel like trying to use them for my record label project. I still sent them a MySpace message and asked them if they needed help with anything. It took one day to hear back from them, and a week later I was on the phone with their manager, talking about managing a street team and doing marketing. A week after that I was on the phone with a man who offered me an internship and, after a full senior year spent working on managing the street team and working on a viral marketing campaign (which I took seriously, unlike college itself), offered me a job in LA immediately after I graduated. I started full-time work the Monday after I graduated, and moved to LA 2 months later.

It had nothing to do with my education. It had nothing to do with college at all other than the fact that I spent too much time looking at people's AIM info. Being a lazy ass literally is the reason that I'm in LA. Even though I've worked incredibly hard and taken a lot of chances, that first step was pretty much just handed to me.

The funniest part is that I remember sitting at my desk during my Junior year and thinking to myself, "Whatever, I'm just going to put everything off because everything I want usually just falls into my lap without me trying anyway." I AM AN ASSHOLE.

And my life still works that way. If I want something bad enough, it will happen.

The band has taken quite a turn from their original sound, and it's not one that I like (so much pop, so little blues), but I still love them by default. How can I ever stop loving the one thing that changed my entire life? I can't.

I am fucking lucky, you guys. I'm lucky and I'm thankful every day.

The snow, the tattoo, the observation deck

By the time my plane landed in Buffalo on Christmas morning, I was pretty ready to eat some cookies and hug everyone. My parents adopted two dogs from the Hinsdale SPCA (that place is so dirty and disgusting, it makes my heart hurt for those animals), and they are amazing.

Where to start? Christmas was wonderful (Papa Scott went all out and bought my mom a ring and earrings for me; in fact, I got diamonds from each of them...couldn't believe my freaking eyes!) and quiet. I finally got to go to the Observation Deck at City Hall in downtown Buffalo - Amanda and I met up with Steve Wills, who I used to work with at a little after-hours pizza place in college. It was so good to see him! If you live in Buffalo and you've never been up to the observation deck, GO. It's just a 360 degree enclosed ledge that sports some of the most breathtaking views of the city I've ever seen. Buffalo has a bad reputation for being an ugly city, which is partly due to the brutal winters, but I've always been able to find beauty in it. Every time I go home and see these things, it makes me more excited to be able to freelance full-time someday so that I can move into one of these lofts downtown and pay less for a huge loft all by myself than I currently pay for my half of a 2bdr in West LA...

I also got a tattoo. It's just a little thing on the outside of my right wrist, but it means I'm .05% closer to completing my sleeve LOL. I kid. But I do want something big eventually; maybe on my upper back?

I don't want to post the obligatory "2012 in review" shit. I don't really feel the need to let a date become the beginning or end of a period of my life; I'd much rather feel thankful for a new day or a new minute and recognize new beginnings as they happen. I would have gone out to celebrate anyway, but the day before I flew home I developed a cough that has since turned into the flu, lucky me! Good thing being a cat lady means that I always have some warm creatures to snuggle with who aren't afraid of my germs :)

I should note that the only reason I'm excited for this month is because it means Girls and Shameless have new seasons. January is so blah, ya know?

When I started this site I figured it would take a really long time to get to a point where I have a solid base of sweet people to read it, but it appears that I've underestimated it. I want to thank all of you for voting in that Featured Blogger of the Year poll - it appears that I have an assload of friends and readers that don't mind taking 30 seconds out of their day to vote for me, and that's awesome! I got my chicken trophy in the mail today and I think I'll put it on my desk at work.

PS I couldn't NOT post this, it made me smile so big. Derik is a friend that I made back when I was working with Grace Potter and the Nocturnals, and he's one of those people that conversation is always enjoyable with. It's so good to have people in your life that lift you up and make you believe that you can do whatever you want, my loves. Even if you (somehow) haven't run into them at a GPN show yet!

Pink and Vinyl

It's warm in my parents' living room, and since my arrival in snowy Franklinville I've had only three more plates of Christmas cookies than I should have.

A series of discussions about my Grandma and reverse mortgages led to my mom and I talking about me inheriting this house when they're gone. This beautiful, happy house is pre-1900s and honestly falling apart at a rate that is somewhat faster than my family can afford to update it. A reverse mortgage would help them tackle some of the huge projects. I found myself thinking about where I would start if this house was suddenly put into my hands. The interior design nerd in me watches an unhealthy amount of Love It or List It and knows what even a $20,000 renovation could do for a house like this, but I would want to save every nail and stone that was replaced because I am so attached.

Carl Barr came to see me today. It's great to see friends that I haven't been able to meet up with in years. And it's so nice to know that even though we're both pretty different than we used to be, conversation flows just as easily as it always did. FRIENDSHIP, YOU GUYZ

(I'm sorry, I have to note how disgusted I am that Kid Rock is currently breaking my TVs speakers while singing Ramble On in tribute to Led Zeppelin for the Kennedy Center Honors. WHY am I watching this, first of all, and second of all WHY would they let that man do such a thing? This is what I resort to when I'm in Franklinville and can't watch HGTV lol)

How is it that we suddenly, and by suddenly I mean over the course of about 20 years, morph into these "types" of people? I still can't figure out what kind of person I am. I know myself very, very well but I can't sum myself up. Maybe that's a good thing. Maybe it means I haven't fallen into the trap of any one thing for so long that it begins to define me. I've always been a bit of a wanderer, anyway. I guess I'm that "type."

I can't post the photos that I want to because my parents' computer doesn't have a photo editor, but here are some from the past week. I've been buying lots of vinyl now that I have something to play it with. I would reeeally love to pick through my dad's collection but I just got him a belt and needle for his own broken turntable so that seems like a very inconsiderate thing to do ;)

PS - Thank you thank you thank you to everyone that voted for me, I won Featured Blogger of the Year on 20sb! You guys are just the wonderfulest, amazingest, votingest blog friends a girl could ever have.
