Interior Designer Wannabe: Chapter 01

Since I'm still nowhere near done with my apartment but have had these pictures ready to post for a while, I guess I might as well share them! If I had a better budget for this stuff (meaning if I didn't spend so much money on going out to eat and buying art that I have no place for) I would be able to do so much more...SIGH. It's coming along nicely though! Living room is next, and it will be TRANSFORMING because I hate it right now.

What are your thoughts on dark gray walls? I drool over them on Pinterest and I think it would look amazing in my room. I'm contemplating.

  1. LOVE love love. All those prints are great! I dream of a time when I can buy beautiful works of art on Etsy. I love my current bedroom, but all the angled walls make for very little space to actually hang things.

I think grey walls are gorgeous whether you have lots of natural light or not. Lots of light is always lovely, but if you've got small windows, it'll be nice and cozy in there, too. :) If your walls have molding for stark white contrast, then all the better. Clearly, I live vicariously through anyone going through a redecoration phase.

    1. I love Etsy art! I also have a tendency to go to the boardwalk on Venice Beach and buy art (such as the orange painting with the middle finger) from townies that have interesting stories to tell.

I'm definitely sold on the grey walls. I don't have much natural light in my apartment but I know it would still look good. All I need is the time/money to paint!

  2. I love gray right now. As long as you accent it with color (and you don't look afraid of color), I think it'll be great!

    1. definitely not afraid of color! I love the idea of being able to match any bright color with dark gray. It looks good with everything!

  3. I like the idea of gray walls. I can't stand plain white walls, so gray is a way to add a color while still giving yourself a fairly neutral palate to work with, if that's important to you.

    1. A neutral wall palette is NECESSARY because I tend to change my mind about decorating every other day ;) hahaha. I think plain white works sometimes but I would sooo much rather have something more interesting!

  4. Your apartment looks beautiful! I love the chair in that last photo. You've definitely inspired me as I just moved into a new place myself. I think dark grey is beautiful when done correctly. I'd do lighter wood/furniture with it to brighten it up a bit.

    1. Thank you so much for stopping by!! I got that chair for 50 bucks at the UCLA thrift store! It took everything I had not to buy its twin...my wallet would have been mad at me but my home would have been REALLY happy :D

  5. My new favorite thing is framing my own photos and using them for art. It's a challenge because that means finding things in the colors I've chosen to decorate in to shoot photos of, if that makes any sense. Luckily, frames are fairly easy to come by and lots of places have frame sales!

    1. makes perfect sense, I used to do that ALL the time. I've started painting for my own walls now! I'm a huge believer in the style of "if you can't find what you want, make it yourself" :D

  6. It really depends on the size of your room. I can't judge it accurately from the pictures. But dark colors can make a room seem smaller while light colors make it appear larger. Look at me trying to be all expert-y over here when all my interior design knowledge comes from watching HGTV shows.
