Interior Design Wannabe: Chapter 04

I saw this today and instantly started planning on selling everything in my bedroom so that I can cut down on stuff. I don't have a lot of stuff; I LOATHE clutter, buttttttt I still have more than I need. Ideally I'd cut way back on little things in order to afford one or two bigger things. I struggle with the lack of natural light in my apartment, so maybe having very little in my room will help make it feel lighter and more breathable.

This means my wishlist looks a little something like this:
4. Fresh flowers to liven it up a bit. But they've gotta be the same; eclectic bouquets make me gag!
5. Black Stepladder (Except this one is stupid expensive. But I like the way it looks)

Also what IS that bedding made of? Velvet? Fur? I don't think I'd want a velvet comforter. Looks great in the picture. Will NOT look great after one night of sleep with one black kitty and one white kitty *shudder*

I am mad at my fucking beige apartment walls. I need WHITE. White. Painting is so easy that I should stop bitching and get it over with, but I need to wait until it's a bit warmer in LA so my windows can stay open.  Does anyone wanna help me paint my entire apartment? I could do my bedroom myself, but the whole apartment is quite a task. I'll cook buy food and make drinks that are heavy on the bourbon and sing to you, and I might even stand on my coffee table and dance for you, if that's what you're into. But you have to be OK with Pop Lock and Drop it. And we have to actually paint and not just get drunk and distracted. And you can't paint like an idiot. Oh no...I have so many rules. No one's gonna wanna help me :( I'm sorry everyone.

I was just telling a coworker about this yesterday. I had a hard time playing in kindergarten because I had rules. I just wanted the right furniture to go in the right rooms of the dollhouse, ya know? I'm a neurotic fucking freakshow HELLO

I was going to put this playlist up on Designers.MX because they're all songs that I've been working to lately, but then I realized that most of them are already on someone else's playlist, and HANNA AIN'T NO COPYCAT so I'll just keep them grounded here on my blog and share them with you. It's similar to Je Fleuris from this post, which 23 of you subscribed to, so if you're looking for more of that style, it's all yours. xo

  1. I love chalkboard walls! Although have the wall right about the bed to kinda bothersome to me! All I can think about is chalkboard dust in my bed!

    1. i thought the same thing, and then decided that in my personal space my bed would need to be turned 90 degrees due to a window anyway, so maybe the chalk dust won't be so bad!

  2. That is a pretty 'Q'

I hate clutter but I'm too lazy and much of a shopaholic to do anything about it. So I suffer and hate myself for it.

I've already planned in my head what I want my bedroom to look like when I can get a place big enough for my grandmother's antique furniture. Wishing and hoping.

Oh beige...it's like residence in university. All the walls were some shade of off-white.

    1. beige makes me want to murder people. i'm being as nice as i can to my walls, but i really want to take them all out.

  3. I hear you on the clutter. I don't have that much stuff, really, but it's probably more than I need. I need to be stricter about what I let myself accumulate over time!

And chalkboard paint!! I've always wanted a chalkboard wall in my apartment, but I'm pretty sure painting my walls is a no-go with my lease. Bummer :(

    1. aw man...can you paint a wall and then paint it back before you move out? i've had to deal with that possibility before. sometimes if the walls look nice enough they actually enjoy that you painted and won't take it out of a deposit!

  4. Excellent inspiration photo. If you were worried about chalk dust over your bed (like Brittany mentioned above), you could consider doing a semi-permanent chalk design over the part that your bed is under so there'd be no need to erase and stir dust up constantly. I like how this writer chose to copy an entire chapter of one of her favorite books on her chalkboard wall: http://gallery.apartmenttherapy.com/photo/the-writing-space-of-one-smart-pop-tart-workspace-tour/item/371967

Also, I hear there's a product you can buy that you use as a base layer before the chalkboard paint which makes it magnetic, which would be useful for pinning up polaroids and magazine tears and what have you. Love the West Elm side table. And it looks like the bedspread is a crushed velvet... If you were comfortable with plain white, you could always do a white duvet or bedspread, and then a deep gray throw with an interesting texture at the foot of the bed to give you the best of both worlds.

    1. you are such a gem. so helpful!! a magnetic layer would be so beyond helpful. i'm also considering scratching the chalkboard paint and just buying a big ass chalkboard that i could take with me to future residencies, since i know i'd have to paint over this one before i move out anyway. who knows!

and crushed velvet is definitely too much for my animal-friendly lifestyle haha, but deep gray always works because it's dark enough for the black kitty but light enough that the white/gray kitty doesn't stick out when they shed!

  5. I seriously love the idea of chalkboard walls, but I'm so neurotic I know I would constantly obsess over how "clean" it looked, how perfect my writing looked, that nobody drew penises on it when they came over, etc, that I think I'd just drive myself nuts.

Would you hang shoes on the ladder/shelf like in the photo?

    1. oh god, the more penises that my friends can draw, the better. bring it on, i say.

i don't think i'd be able to hang shoes on it, BUT only becuase i don't own a single pair of heels :D i might hang a couple necklaces from it!

  6. I love that giant chalkboard wall with the minimal decor & furniture...definitely wouldn't have the same effect with a cluttered room! If you didn't want to paint and do something like that, they have some pretty big chalkboard decals out there.

Ughhh beige! That was my least favorite things about college dorms & apartments. White would have made SUCH a serious difference. Good luck with your space, reducing your stuff is hard but so worth it!

    1. exactly, i'm thinking a chalkboard decal might be the way to go, just because i want my walls to be white and i DOOONT want to have to repaint before i move out. it's just too much work, even if ti's just one wall! THANK YOU <3

  7. Ahh, that just looks positively amazing - a friend of mine did something similar with a wall in her room, except she painted it white and then had paint buckets that whenever anyone came over, they had to contribue to the wall somehow. It looked really great :)

Whenever I think of beige I always think of like....dirty cigarette stain. I don't know why, but either way, I can feel your pain.
