More Today Than Yesterday

Yesterday I sat at a table in a restaurant with the sweet company of someone who has seen so much of my best and worst. The light was just right and it was warm and I found myself outside looking in, peeking at a life that is so similar to what I had hoped it would be when I was younger. It's hard to describe the subtle importance of those feelings. Almost déjà vu-ish in nature but much more meaningful. Somehow I ended up here, and here is such a lovely place and time.

I think I've finally found my "tribe" so to speak- the people that just click and fall right into their own spot in my life. A couple are coworkers, a few are misfits that I've fallen into friendships with, and a few have been there for years. I will never stop stressing my complete and total love for people that truly accept and understand me. They are rare but they are everything.

Since I became December's blogger of the month, I'm automatically in the running for Blogger of the Year. Here's the poll where everyone is voting - you don't need to be logged into anything to vote and it only takes a second! The winner gets a weird chicken trophy and some serious street cred (some blog traffic too I'd imagine). If you've enjoyed the last 1.0833333333 years of posts, or if you just enjoy me, go vote!

I leave you with a very select (select because most of them are EMBARRASSING. When will I learn to stop being so embarrassing?! *wags finger at self*) number of photos from my work holiday party over the weekend. And maybe a couple others.

(That is a 10 foot long snake. I WANT HIM)

PS - Nik got me a record player for Christmas, DO YOU KNOW HOW HAPPY THAT MADE ME?

Very happy! Pink Floyd's Animals album sounds sooooo good on vinyl. I'll definitely be making a trip to Record Surplus this weekend to see what treasures I can find in the $0.99 bins. Plus the interior design nerd in me is envisioning bookshelves full of records, so I had better start collecting.

PS - more introverted people have been posted on this page. We've still got people posting about it which is amazing! If I haven't put up a link to your post yet, please make sure you send me a link to it here and I'll add you to the list.

PPS - BV and I were recently brainstorming some band names. Slimy and the Cubes, Slarty Bardfast and the Slimies, and I've always wanted a band called Baby Snakey and the Shrimpies (there used to be a reason but it's long gone from my memory now). I'd really love to hear some genius band names if you've got em, because my weird sense of humor leaves me feeling totally tickled by the three that I've listed for you. GIVE ME MOARRRR

A little bitta everything

I typed "A little bitta" and immediately started singing Mambo No. 5 in my head (which has been there for hours now and I don't know whyyyy haaaaalp).

If you know me at all, you know how much I obsess over Bri Emery's huuuge blog, DesignLoveFest. This girl is EVERYWHERE, and she's so inspiring. So you can imagine the total fucking FREAKOUT I had yesterday morning when I wandered over to her site and saw one of my own designs up for download! Here's the post if you wanna see it and download the wallpaper that I made. It was originally a background that I designed for my work computer to remind myself to breathe (that's what the braille says), but I wanted to share it with everyone, and Bri sure helped make that happen!

Yesterday was one of the most satisfying days I've had in so long. Sometimes I wonder how life always seems to come together for me in such a non-traditional but wonderful fashion, but I think I'm starting to understand just how much I actually make that happen for myself. I don't feel like I'm working that hard because I love what I do SO MUCH, but the effort's there. I dunno how I got here other than good luck and even better timing, but it blows my mind that I can love something so much that I can work at it almost every waking hour and still want more.

(And since I am often the girl who walks away from "good" things, it gives me hope that when I find non-career related things that are truly right as well,  I'll always crave more from them, too. It's vague, but it makes sense to me.)

Allow me to geek out for a moment. There's an episode of the X-Files called "All Things" where this conversation takes place:
Scully: What if there was only one choice and all the other ones were wrong? And there were signs along the way to pay attention to.
Mulder: Mmm. Then all the... choices would then lead to this very moment. One wrong turn, and... we wouldn't be sitting here together.

Those 2 lines sum up everything. I've always just done whatever felt right, and it magically worked. I'm very lucky.

I've had about 5 different versions of this playlist simmering on Spotify over the last 2 weeks but couldn't seem to get the right flow - I think I found it today! God I hope my French is correct. If it's not, please tell me ASAP so I can re-upload the cover here AND on designers.MX hahaha

AND!! I can't leave without mentioning this:

Between the comments on my last post and Cassie's post, the tweets, the 20sb discussion, and my friends' reponses, I'd say the beginnings of this little Introvert Revolution were a big fat SUCCESS. So many people have already responded to tell us that they loved the idea and are going to write about it, or just thanked us for the posts that we wrote. I am especially happy about the comments that I received from people that aren't introverted; trust me, extroverted (turns out, "extraverted" and "extroverted" are BOTH correct) people taking the time to read through what we had to say and really thinking about it means more than you will ever know!

Don't forget - if you write about it, send Cassie or myself a link so that we can read along and put a link to it on our pages!

Love ALL of you. Really.

Introverted Sonofabitch

If you're a fan of my Facebook page (FYI if you're not a fan you're pissing me off right now), you know that last week I posted something about how Cassie from Witty Title Here and I made something awesome, and that you'd probably find out about it this week. Well here it is, my loves! We teamed up to create a little somethin' that you can put on your own blog and a way to spread the news that introverts are not, in fact, a bunch of lonely freaks.

I was raised on a dirt road in the middle of the nowhere with no neighbors and no brothers and sisters. My parents are introverts. I had very few friends until I got to Jr. High, and I had a terrible time trying to fit in when I was growing up. I always preferred to sit on the sidelines and observe rather than immediately join in. Most would say I was "set up" for being introverted.

BUT (and this is a very big but):

The difference between being an introvert and being shy/quiet is that I would've turned out this way no matter where or how I was raised. Introversion is an actual sensitivity to dopamine due to different dominant neuro-pathways. We are not raised to be introverted, just as we are not raised to be gay or straight or mentally disabled or musical prodigies. We are born with it, and it is part of us no matter how much we do or do not nurture it. We cannot fix it, nor is it something that should need fixing to begin with.

Until about a year ago, I paid no attention to the fact that introversion was my most defining trait. I wondered why I constantly felt like I wasn't getting what I wanted from the people in my life even though I knew that I loved them and that they were good people.

This article was the first thing I found (I believe it was Evi that shared it, so thank you!) that made me pay attention because I finally felt understood. Those last 2 lines especially were a game changer, because that's what I seemed to struggle with most. Carl King also wrote an amazing post about this that's worth a read! The reason Cassie and I put this together is because we want to celebrate the fact that we are introspective, observant, reserved people. We notice things that others may not. We take our time and only say the things that we know will make a difference. We recharge when - and only when - we are by ourselves. And we don't want anyone else to feel guilty or wrong for having trouble with what our very extraverted society believes to be "normal."

So here’s where you come in. If you’re an introvert, and you feel as though you’ve been misperceived as shy/slow/weird/irrelevant because of who you are, we invite you to put one of these badass badges (Go here for the downloads and more info!) on your blog and write a post based on the following prompt: Just because I'm introverted, it doesn't mean...

Here are mine:

It doesn't mean I'm shy.
I have no shortage of opinions or things to say. EVER. I am loud and obnoxious and feisty, but only for certain people. Introverts are usually extremely picky about who they open up to: not just in love, but in casual conversation. It takes a while to decide if I want to subject someone to all my nonsense. And I can tell you with absolute certainty: when someones tries to draw it out of me, it usually doesn't work.

It doesn't mean I can still function like an extravert.
This is especially true at work. At my first job, I used to get put on the spot often. "Just throw some ideas at me," is a phrase that makes me panic. It's not how my mind works, and it doesn't help me produce results. Instead, it makes me retreat and feel inadequate because I can't spit out ideas like other people can. What I need in order to do my best work is to stand back and observe for a while. I may not have a lot to say while everyone brainstorms out loud as a team, but I promise that I am paying very close attention. When I feel that I've come up with a quality idea, I'll share it and work very hard to see it come to life. But I can almost guarantee that the great ideas won't come to me until I'm left alone.

It's also true in relationships. It's hard for introverts and extraverts to be together. The extravert will likely feel a bit neglected, and the introvert will likely feel a bit overwhelmed. It's perfectly acceptable for a date to want to take me out and introduce me to all his friends, and I'd love to do that to show him that I'm interested in his life - but the thought of it makes me shudder because it's just too much stimulation at one time. A balance and an understanding of this has to be reached for a relationship to survive.

It doesn't mean I'm a bitch!
Trust me, me being a bitch is an entirely separate issue ;) When I was growing up I was branded as a bitch because I sat back and watched my classmates before I joined in. If I didn't feel comfortable joining in, I wouldn't, and there was not a damn thing anyone could do about it. That doesn't go over well in school!

We hope you’ll join in and spread the love with this idea! And when you do, send me a link to your post so I can check you out (wink). I'll make sure to post each link on the downloads page!

Once again - the link to the downloads page.
